Drawing inspiration from Franz Kafka's quote, "I was ashamed of myself when I realized that life was a costume party, and I attended with my real face." My paintings explore themes of inauthenticity and the creation of artificial lifestyles.
Combining satire and social commentary, wearing masks to hide their identities, the portraits are meant to parody bourgeoisie grandeur while exposing its absurdities. Symbolizing the dehumanizing effects of our institutions and media and how they are intertwined to perpetuate a false sense of identity and promote impossible ideals.
I grew up in Miami's exiled Cuban community, deeply affected by the Cuban Revolution of the 1950s. The Cold War-era narratives opposing Fidel Castro and communism, combined with the ideological tensions between Catholicism, Socialism, and Capitalism in Latin American culture, influenced my worldview and fostered a cynical outlook on authority, identity, and society.
